⚠️ Consumer Alert: Rogue Traders and Scam Calls – Stay Safe This Summer

Lancashire County Council's Trading Standards Service has issued a new warning to residents following a surge in scams and rogue trader incidents across the county.

Beware of Scam Jet Washing and Roof Cleaning Services

Households in areas including Over Wyre and Goosnargh have reported cold callers offering services like gutter cleaning, roof moss removal, and jet washing driveways. While these may seem like small jobs, residents have found themselves being charged extortionate fees – in some cases over £1000 – for minimal or uncompleted work.

These traders are often pushy and escalate the work once it’s started. If you've paid by bank transfer or card and believe you've been scammed, contact your bank as soon as possible. Depending on the circumstances, you may be entitled to a refund.

Caution Urged Over Urgent Roof Repairs

The recent heavy rain has left some households needing urgent roof repairs. Unfortunately, this urgency is being exploited by rogue traders – particularly those contacted via online trader platforms. Reports include a trader allegedly from the Midlands charging £3000 for very limited work.

Always use local, reputable tradespeople. Get multiple quotes and ensure any agreement is provided in writing, including full contact details of the trader.

BT Landline Switchover Scam Calls

Scammers pretending to be from BT are using the national move to digital landlines to con people into giving personal and payment details. Some have even demanded immediate payment, threatening to disconnect the landline.

Be wary – even if the caller knows your name and address. BT will never ask for immediate payments over the phone. For legitimate information, visit: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/moving-landlines-to-digital-technologies
